The eleventh and largest group of Jewish, stranded refugees who were granted permission by the Canadian government to enter Canada, landed at Halifax on the eve of Rosh Hashana on the S.S. “Braga”, after a journey of twenty-three days directly from Constanza.
The group, consisting of 400 persons, were extended a warm welcome by the Jewish community of Halifax and representatives of the Immigrant Aid Society. 160 of the group remained in Montreal; the other 240 left immediately for Central and Western Canada.
The group made a particularly lasting impression, owing to the fact that among them were many of high intellectual attainments and professional men, such as engineers, dentists students, Hebrew teachers, cantors and Shochetim.
