Anti-Semitic Endek (Nationalist) students, climaxing a wave of anti-Jewish rioting that has swept colleges here for the past ten days, clamped a virtual siege on Warsaw University today.
Occupying all entrances to the university’s buildings, the students refused to allow other students still within to leave, and threatened to keep them imprisoned until police released all Endeks arrested following yesterday’s disorders in which seven Jews and a Gentile were wounded.
A cordon of police, thrown around the university grounds, was helpless to intervene since university autonomy bars police from entering the premises.
All but forty of 200 Nationalist students arrested in the disturbances yesterday, which centered around the Warsaw Trade Academy, were released today. Seven of those still held were transferred to the central prison for further investigation.
The Trade Academy, which had just reopened after a brief suspension caused by previous disorders, was closed indefinitely today.
The disturbances arose from efforts of the Nationalists to force Jewish students to occupy “ghetto” benches in classrooms. Similar excesses have occurred in Lwow, where Lwow University and the Polytechnic Institute have been forced to suspend classes temporarily to restore order.
In Lwow, a Jewish merchant and two other persons were wounded yesterday when a bomb exploded in the Jew’s shop. The three were removed to the hospital.
