That it is the duty of Great Britain as the mandatory power for Palestine to explore Palestine’s antiquities was expressed by Lord Allenby, conqueror of Jerusalem, in an address at the meeting here of the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem.
Following the report of Professor Crowfoot, director of the school, on the excavations at Ohel, Lord Allenby said it would be a disgrace if England, entrusted with the mandate for Palestine and who freed Palestine from Turkish dominion, does not accept the duty to explore the Palestine antiquities. No part of the world has such a field for exploration, he said. Nation after nation flourished and died there; invasion after invasion came and was driven back. Every generation left its traces and the material has accumulated for thousands of years. It is our duty to uncover them and give them to the world, Lord Allen-by declared.
