The entire Jewish community in the town of Neuwedell, near Berlin, comprising 22 individuals, has been under arrest since Sept. 29 on undisclosed charges, it was learned here today. On Sept. 27, the second day of Rosh Hashonah, the community found its synagogue barred by a barbed-wire fence bearing the sign, “Jews not Admitted.” Subsequently, the local authorities ordered the arrests of all the town’s Jews.
The women are confined in one large cell and the men are locked up separately. Efforts to secure their release so far have proved unavailing.
The United States Lines, it was learned, has since Oct. I been refusing to accept Reichsmarks in payment of passage to America. Refugees who are unable to obtain dollars are consequently forced to travel on German liners, since for the most part it is impossible for them to obtain transit visas in order to sail on foreign ships that do not touch Reich ports.
