T. Ephrati, prominent member of the Hebrew theatrical troupe, Habima, was drowned today, near Berlin, in the Spree River.
Ephrati went out in a boat with Anna Rovina, famous leading woman of the Habima. He dived from the boat to take a swim. Ephrati disappeared under the water and all attempts of the aid summoned by Rovina’s calls failed to yield the body. The search extended late into the evening.
The death of Ephrati is a severe blow to the Habima. He was one of the most gifted members of the troupe. His death has caused much sorrow among his friends and the other members of the Habima.
Ephrati was born in Lithuania about thirty years ago. His real name was Ephrati Chaschek. He joined the Habima in 1921. Among the roles played by Ephrati were the slave in Jacob’s dream, the Prophet Elijah in The Golem and the Shamos in The Dybbuk. He was one of the directors of the Habima. A brother of the late actor lives in New York.
