The West German Republic can contribute to a lasting peace in the Middle East if it helps Israel with regard to the European Common Market and in other ways. Prime Minister Levi Eshkol said today. Israel is seeking associate membership in the six-nation European Common Market which represents her major export cutlet.
Mr. Eshkol said in an interview with the newspaper. Die Welt, that he appreciated the many ways in which West Germany had expressed sympathy and solidarity with Israel during the recent conflict. He said relations between the Federal Republic and Israel had improved to a large degree and it was to be hoped that future relations would be even more positively developed.
He stressed, however, that on a political solution of the Middle East conflict, only direct negotiations between Israel and the Arab states could bring lasting peace. He reiterated his readiness to meet President Nasser of Egypt and King Hussein of Jordan.
