Finance Minister Levi Eshkol rejected today a Progressive Party demand that the compulsory loan to finance settlement of immigrants in Israel be modified in view of the fact that immigration is not reaching the figures anticipated when the loan was enacted.
Mr. Eshkol stressed that “we have not given up hope for the renewal of immigration from countries from which it has been discontinued.” He added that Israelis could not discourage the efforts of Diaspora Jews “by excluding ourselves from the general all-out efforts for aliya (immigration).” He said needs had not become smaller.
A meeting of the Progressive Party last night declared that Minister of Justice Pinhas Rosen should meet Mr. Eshkol to discuss the question. A meeting was scheduled for later this week.
