Premier Levi Eshkol, addressing a press luncheon here today, said that he may meet with Chancellor Ludwig Erhard of West Germany. He added that, while he had no definite plans now for such a meeting, “my meeting Chancellor Erhard is not excluded.” He explained that he felt that meetings with heads of state were always useful.
Asked how he envisaged Israel-West German relations after termination this year of reparations payments to Israel, he replied that “as a farmer, I never put the cart before the horse.”
In replies to other questions, the Premier voiced satisfaction with the stand of African leaders at the recent Egyptian-sponsored African Unity Conference at Cairo who declined to allow themselves to be dragged by President Nasser into the Israel Arab dispute. He also described the existing status quo on relations between religious and secular elements in Israel as satisfactory.
