Deficit grants to Jewish agencies, totaling $1, 097, 000 for the new fiscal year that opened last week, have been approved by the Jewish Community Council of Essex County here, according to an announcement today by Martin Jellin, president of the Council.
The funds have been allocated to the local Jewish health and welfare agencies and refugee services to meet approximately half of their total operating budgets. The agencies are expected to provide sums totaling $1,050,000 for their needs.
Mr. Jellin said that, of the total of $1,097,000 granted the agencies to help cover their deficits, $807,000 is available from United Jewish. Appeal funds; $240, 000 from the United Appeals campaign of Newark; and $14, 500 from the United Community Services of suburban Orange and Maplewood. In addition, the Council’s board of trustees voted approval of an unfunded deficit of over $35,000.
