The establishment of an Israeli Consulate General in the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong is under active consideration, Foreign Ministry sources disclosed today. They said the Foreign Ministry and the Finance Ministry are examining the prospects and the budgetary requirements. Israel is presently represented in Hong Kong by an Honorary Consul. The proposal to establish a Consulate General in Hong Kong was first made by Dr. Zevi Dinstein, Deputy Minister of Finance, who returned recently from a visit to the Far East.
Dr. Dinstein, who examined Israeli economic prospects in the colony, said Israeli business activity there already warranted the establishment of a Consulate. He told newsmen it would engage primarily in economic activities which could lead to political consequences. He said that with China opening up to trade with the West and beginning to influence events, Israel should not miss an opportunity to establish its representation on China’s doorstep.
