Vrau Esther Boer van Rijk, Holland’s most famous actress, celebrated her eightieth birthday here today at her home, where she received showers of congratulations from devoted followers in all walks of life.
Despite her advanced age, Vrau van Rijk is still active and full of vigor. Her popularity has not ebbed with the passing of the years and the press here devoted much space to eulogistic articles.
The most famous actress in Holland, Vrau van Rijk was early recognized as one of the most outstanding exponents of naturalism on the stage. Daughter of a pious Jewish family of Rotterdam, she began her stage career at the age of 21, and has won wide acclaim, not only in Holland, but also in Germany, France and England, where she frequently made guest appearances.
DISAVOWS HITLER REMARKS
Dr. Gunther Keil, professor of German at Hunter College, who was accused of pro-Nazi sentiment by the American Jewish Congress as a result of a purported interview upon his recent arrival from Germany, denied in the most emphatic terms that he was in favor of the Hitler regime, or anti-Jewish in any way. Dr. Keil said that he had been misquoted by the press.
