The total amount of damages in Palestine from the recent disturbances well exceeded $5,000,000, according to the Jerusalem correspondent of the London “Financial News.” In Hebron alone the damages are estimated at $750,000.
The Palestine treasury is neither liable nor able to meet such heavy obligations, writes the correspondent. It is unlikely that much loot will be recovered from the Arabs, and it is difficult to say from where the indemnities are to come.
Everybody expects the admission, in principle at least, that the sufferers are to be indemnified. It will doubtless be necessary to compensate the victims in order to enable their resumption of normal occupations and to maintain the good name of Palestine in the commercial world markets.
