Creation of a central European Jewish organization to provide for expanded educational and cultural services to the hundreds of small Jewish communities in Europe threatened with assimilation was proposed here today at the close of a two day meeting of 30 representatives of European Jewish communities.
The meeting was convened by the Standing Conference of European Jewish Community Services. Claude Kelman, of Paris, chairman of the Standing Conference and vice-chairman of the host Fonds Social Juif Unifie, said that, of the 1,250,000 Jews living in the 17 countries represented in the Standing Conference, 1,000,000 lived in Britain and France. The 250,000 others are scattered in tiny groups in 14 countries “in a situation where the surrounding society is undergoing rapid social change.” He said the problem of survival of “these tiny communities” was urgent.
