“There is a strong determination on the part of Jewish communities of Western Europe to help large numbers of Jews from Rumania and other East European countries to reach Israel, ” Dr. Joseph J.Schwartz, vice president of the Israel Bond Organization, said today upon his return from Europe.
Dr. Schwartz announced that a program had been worked out for the participation of the Jewish communities of Western Europe in a new $300, 000, 000 Israel bond issue, which will be officially inaugurated in the United States early next month. The launching of the issue, to be floated by the Government of Israel in the United States, will take place at a national inaugural conference at Miami during the first week-end in March, he said.
In addition to conferring with European leaders. Dr. Schwartz also visited Menna to witness the arrival of Jews coming out of Eastern Europe on their way to Israel. “The expected influx of 100. 000 new immigrants into Israel from Eastern European countries this year,” be declared, “has placed heavy financial burdens on the Government of Israel, and for that reason, Israel bond funds will be vitally needed to provide for the employment and housing of the newcomers.”
