The European Parliament voted today to back “with all its available means” Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres’ peace plan. The Parliament, which represents the 10 European Economic Community member-states, also called on Jordan to heed the Israeli Premier’s calls.
The resolution, proposed by the Socialist group and backed by the Italian Communists, also called for the recognition of the Palestine Liberation Organization as the representative of the Palestinian people and said it should take part in the Middle East peace process. The resolution was adopted by a show of hands without an actual vote count.
The European Parliament, elected by the 10 EEE member-states directly, has only a consultative status.
