The cable which the Palestine Arab Higher Committee sent to the United Nations, (which they later withdrew) requesting permission to attend the Lake Success sessions as a body representing the Arab population of the ?mdate, was sent by the ex-?tufti of Jerusalem, from his exile headquarters at Cairo, reports here state.
A few weeks ago, the Arab Higher Committee shifted its headquarters from Jerusalem to Cairo. When the Committee decided to send the cable to the United Nations, Dr. Hussein Khalidi, the Committee’s Secretary-General, was in Jerusalem — which led to some confusion, for when reporters in Jerusalem queried him on “your cable,” he replied in all good faith, “I know nothing about it.”
He knew more shortly thereafter, however, when on May 4 the Mufti telephoned him from Cairo and informed him that the cable had been sent to Lake Success in the name of the Secretary-General.
