Proof that the Beersheba region was densely populated some 5,000 years ago has been unearthed by an archaeological party headed by Jean Perrot of the French National Center for Scientific Research.

The excavators have uncovered remnants of a village of stone walled houses with crude fireplaces. Among the potsherds discovered were painted pottery and bits of copper which indicate that the inhabitants of the village exploited copper mines and used copper implements. The racial stock of the inhabitants of the ancient village has not been established.
