Rabbi Samuel M. Cohen, pioneer in Jewish education for the past quarter century and leading authority on the organization of religious life in American Jewish communities, will resign on December 31 as executive director of the United Synagogue of America, a post in which he has served for twenty-eight years, it was announced here today.
Rabbi Cohen, who, himself, has organized 150 congregations throughout the country, first came to the United Synagogue in 1917 when it consisted of only 40 congregations. Today, this organization, which is a federation of synagogues, consists of more than 1,200 affiliated congregations, including sisterhoods, men’s clubs and young people’s leagues.
