Members of the Government party are trying to amend the anti-Jewish bill in committee in favor of widows and orphans of the Jewish war dead. Their efforts are expected shortly to be successful. Meanwhile, the movement for conversion to Christianity has virtually stopped as a result of the fact that the bill is based on racial rather than religious criteria. In some instances converts have returned to Judaism, among them a high civil servant.
Addressing a meeting of his constituency in Onod, Premier Bela Imredy declared Friday night that the safeguarding of the Hungarian race was the main object of his policy. He declared that there was no reason to fear that Hungarian economy would be shaken as a result of the anti-Jewish bill since hundreds of experienced people were ready to take over Jews’ positions. He also indicated that the Social Democratic Party would be dissolved.
