Extradition hearings will open here tomorrow for Mrs. Hermine Braunsteiner Ryan, a former Nazi concentration camp guard wanted in West Germany on war crimes charges. Federal Judge Jacob Mishler refused Friday to delay the hearings. The delay was sought by Mrs. Ryan’s attorney, Leo Barry, who contended that her U.S. citizenship was revoked illegally by immigration officials in 1971.
Mrs. Ryan was arrested two weeks ago after an extradition request from authorities in Bonn caused a halt in deportation proceedings against her by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. Judge Mishler twice denied bail and she has been confined to a women’s prison. Mrs. Ryan who is married to an American citizen, lost her citizenship after it was determined that she had gained it ten years ago by concealing the fact that she was convicted by an Austrian court in 1949 of brutality toward concentration camp inmates. She served as a guard at Maidanek in Poland and at other concentration camps.
The Polish government has also reportedly asked for Mrs. Ryan’s extradition. The charges against her in West Germany include helping to select Jewish women and children for the gas chambers.
