Leading physicists attending the sessions here of the American Physical Society, were among the guests last night at a reception and dinner at the Regency Hotel in honor of Dr. Yuval Ne’eman, the noted Israeli physicist, one of the discoverers of the “eightfold way” theory which has blazed a new trail in theoretical physics.
Dr. Ne’eman is now the chairman of the physics department of Tel Aviv University. The reception was tendered by the American Friends of the Tel Aviv University, under the chairmanship of Daniel G. Ross, chairman of the board of the organization. Prof. Maurice Goldhaber, head of the Brookhaven National Laboratories, where Dr. Ne’eman’s theory was tested and confirmed, introduced the Israeli scientist and stressed the significance of his work.
Dr. Ne’eman described the development of Tel Aviv University which now has more than 6, 000 students, the organization of its faculties, and plans for development of the physics department, the faculty of which, he said, now numbers 80. In reply to questions, he said that departments of the university worked in close cooperation with Israel’s other educational and research institutions.
