A magistrate’s court today fined John William Charnley, secretary of the Hull branch of the British Union of Fascists, ?17 and costs, with the alternative of serving 41 days in prison, for painting “Perish Judaea” on a number of Jewish shops in Hull. Magistrate MacDonald declared Charnley was lucky to be tried by him and not by a high court judge.
