There is still no word about the fate of Dr. Jacques Zylberberg, the Belgian Jewish professor arrested and imprisoned by the Chilean military Junta. According to a French woman who was arrested with him and who has just been released, Dr: Zylberberg is being kept in secret in “very difficult conditions.”
The junta reportedly accuses Dr. Zylberberg of having incited a group of those held with him to rebel, and of having been the leader of a group of guerrillas in the south of Chile. As professor of sociology at the University of Concepcion under Dr. Salvador Allende’s administration, Dr. Zylberberg taught courses in Marxism which reportedly were widely followed. The French woman, who was not identified, said the conditions of Dr. Zylberberg’s imprisonment were of a nature to “inspire concern for his health and safety.” Dr. Zylberberg was arrested two weeks ago and imprisoned at the Kuiri-Kuina naval base off the Chilean coast of Talcahuana.
