Hunger and sickness, spreading rapidly among the Cuban population as a result of the virtual state of civil war existing here and the general strike which has crippled all transportation and communication facilities on the island, have seriously affected the Jewish population here.
Scores of Jews are reported to have been wounded in the disorders which are raging from one end of the island to the other and which in places have reached the dimensions of minor military engagements. A number of Jews are also reported to have been arrested by the military authorities but definite information as to the number could not be obtained due to the general state of affairs.
Grave fears are felt here for the safety of some six hundred Jews scattered about in the provinces.
There has been no communication from them because all communication means have been paralyzed by the strike and by the disorders.
Jewish business establishments in the provincial cities of Cienfuegos and Cruces have been looted and plundered, according to meagre reports trickling through to this city.
Hundreds of suffering Jews, men, women and children, have appealed to the Jewish organizations here for help which is not forthcoming due to lack of funds and supplies. An appeal is being made to American Jewish organizations for food and
