A federal grand jury which recently concluded the first phase of a sweeping investigation in Miami of anti-racial and anti-religious acts in Florida, will resume its investigation on Jan. 12, it was announced here today by the Justice Department.
The investigation was started in 1951 following the bombing of synagogues and the bomb murder of a Negro leader in Miami. Yesterday, U. S. marshals arrested a prominent woman civic leader in Miami and three alleged members of the Ku Klux Klan on charges of perjury or making false statements during the jury’s investigation of the terrorist activities. All four were released on $1,000 bond each. The date of their trial will be set later.
The Justice Department here said that the arrested woman was Mrs. Helen Russel, leader of the Edison Center Community in Miami. She was charged with perjury. The three men were charged with making false statements to government officers. The three had denied membership in the Ku Klux Klan, but the jury said it had found that all three had been active members of the Hialeah Klan.
