Earlier, the first medical convoy to reach Jerusalem from Tel Aviv arrived. The motorcade consisted of some 50 trucks loaded with medical supplies and special food for both patients and members of the city’s hospital staffs. Later, another 100 trucks arrived crammed with food for the inhabitants at large. About 150 American citizens–almost all Jews–have registered with the American consulate to return to the United States. Arrangements have been made for them to leave the city for Haifa on June 24 and board the U.S. vessel Marine Carp on June 25. Several rabbis who yesterday visited the Old City today reported that the famous Hurva Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in Jerusalem, has been reduced to rabble and several near-by houses of worship are badly damaged. The rabbis were accompanied on their tour, during which no incident arose, by a captain Berry of the U.N. staff; Col, Abdullah el Tel, Arab Legion area commander; and A. Bergman, former Jewish district commission in Jerusalem. They were unable to visit the Wailing Wall because of the time limitation on their tour of inspection.
