The first free religious service in Milan since 1938 was held yesterday on the premises of the Jewish community council, which was formerly the headquarters of the local Fascist Party. Rabbi Herman Friedenthal of Vernea presized. Rabbi Friedenthal had been conducting clandestine services in private homes here for the past two years.
Raffaele Contone, President of the Milan Jewish Community, Cap. N. Arnstein, Jewish officer from Palestine, and Col. Hamilton Walker, civil affairs officer of the fouth Corps of the U.S. army, addressed the services. Among the congregation of 500 were Col. Harry Hershenson, of Chicago, who is AMG commissioner for Milan, Col. Jack Brimer, of Cleveland, Reuben Resnik of the JDC, and many British and Americal soldiers.
Of the 12,000 Jews who formerly resided in the Milan district, only about 1,200 are now here.
