The S.S. Atzmauth sailed last night for Haifa, carrying the first group of Jewish “hard core” emigrants to leave Europe for Israel. The group, which arrived here Thursday from Germany, included 30 ill, aged and infirm men and women, whose pessage was arrenged by the Joint Distribution Committee, Jewish Agency, and the I.R.O. They will arrive in Eaifa on the eve of Passover.
Many of the “hard core” emigrants were carried aboard ship on stretchers. The group is being accompanied to Isreel by J.D.C. medical personnel who will look after them until the ship docks. In Israel, the group will be cared for under a special program for “hard core” immigrants recently initiated by the J.D.C., Jewish Agency and the Israel Government, and which is expected to make possible the eventual emigration of some 4,000 DP “hard core” cases and 5,000 dependents.
