Several hundred Jewish lawyers and jurists convened here tonight for the first International Jewish Lawyers Conference, at which they were greeted by a brief message from Prime Minister David Ben Gurion, and heard a dissertation on “The Spirit of Israel’s Laws” by Attorney General Chaim Cohn.
The largest of the contingents at the conference is from the United States, the second largest group is French. There is one lawyer from Poland, and several other attorneys are expected from Eastern European countries.
Mr. Ben Gurion, in his message, cited three basic Hebrew precepts: “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself”; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation”; and “One law shall be unto you and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you.” If these “supreme laws,” said Mr. Ben Gurion, were to be adopted by the legislatures of all nations, and “if the United Nations succeeded in establishing them in relations between nations, the world would be delivered from danger, ruin and destruction.”
