The first Jewish refugees from Italy arrived in Switzerland today. They are all Austrian Jews who found refuge in Italy after Austro-German Anschluss and have now been ordered to leave italian soil. After intervention by the Jewish Community and the local refugee committee, the expatriates were permitted to remain in Geneva temporarily. Efforts are being made to secure visas for overseas settlement for them.
The establishment of a refugee camp in Geneva similar to the camp at Diepoldsau and elsewhere is now under consideration. According to reports strict discipline is maintained at the camps. Refugees are not allowed to visit cafes and places of public entertainment, and they must return to the camps by ten o’clock every night, with lights going out at 10:30. They must arise at 7:30 in the morning and undergo daily police inspection.
