Fish Dealers Not Too Finicky but Prefer Their Nazis Finless

Who dragged a red herring across the trail of New York’s fish dealers?

Virtually the entire fish trade here, wholesale and retail, was asking that question Friday after a number of fish consignments from the Middle West had arrived here thoroughly Hitlerized.

The fish, staring straight ahead with that expression of patriotic fervor so frequently found in Yorkville these days, and branded with the swastika in the manner of a great proportion of the city’s German American element, were promptly returned to consignees in Michigan. The crates in which they came and their wrappings had been decorated with the hakenkreuz emblem.

"ENOUGH BI-PED NAZIS"

The concensus among fish dealers in the city appeared to be, "We have enough bi-ped Hitlerites, imported direct from Germany, without dragging the lakes of the Middle West for new varieties."

The Franklin Fish Company at 33 Peck Slip was among the concerns receiving the cargo of natatorial Nazis. This firm has been buying from Carl Treppop & Company and from Charles Stemnitz of Cheboygan. In all, four boxes of the Hitlerite monstrosities arrived during this and last week, and all have been returned post ### to their original owners.

Commenting on the Nazi invasion of his market, Max Hutt, manager of the Franklin company, yesterday declared, "Some people have tried to tell us that the swasikas we found on the fish boxes are merely old Indian signs which still persist in the Middle West. Well that may be so-it’s enough to make me see red. We’ll have no orthodox herring swastika’d in our establishment."

He has wired the consignees to the effect that they must send ungleichgeschaltet fish or none at all.

Many expressed the opinion that other concerns importing fish from the same territory have sold their wares to the large group of Jewish consumers in New York. A survey undertaken in a narrow field of investigation disclosed conflicting opinions as to the desirability of eating such fish.

ENJOYS CLEANING THEM

One kosher butcher said:

"Now I can take a real interest in my job. All I have to do is imagine a Charlie Chaplin mustache on the fish, and I get a great deal of pleasure in cleaning it. The rest of the feature are identical with those of Adolf."

Some observers state that a number of the fish held their right fins extended in the manner of Nazis at a meeting of the Friends of New Germany. The analogy of the regimentation of the two Nazi sects, they said, as further completed by the fact that most of the fish had their mouths open but said nothing.
