The fishing industry, which thrived in the ancient Holy Land, is experiencing a revival. Two fishing companies formed in recent months report the year 1936 on the whole favorable.
The two companies are the Palestine Fishing Co., of Haifa, and the National Fishing Co., of Jaffa. In addition, a group of Haifa fishermen have built a small motor trawler which they have been operating with a certain degree of success.
One handicap is that industrial developments on the coast of Haifa, Jaffa and Tel Aviv have led to the closing of considerable valuable areas to fishing. Haifa was once the richest fishing ground on the Palestine coast. New grounds have been discovered, however, notably between Caesaria and Tantoura.
Transport of live fish from Lake Tiberias to Tel Aviv had been started last year and was successful until halted by the disturbances.
