The first international Jewish youth conclave in Germany since the Hitler era was held in West Berlin for five days and was devoted to discussions about the problems of the existing Jewish community in Germany. Some 60 youth leaders have attended the Inter-European Conference of Jewish Youth.
Rabbi Gunther Hirschberg of New York, who was born in Berlin, and who was the only American rabbi participating in the conference, spoke at the Sabbath Evening Service of the Liberal Synagogue in Berlin which the youth leaders attended. The conference, which had representation from Britain, Holland, West Germany and other countries, was organized by the Reform World Union for Progressive Judaism.
The program included seminars and discussions with German and Jewish secular authorities and talks with the theologians at the Free University of Berlin. The youth leaders reviewed the political situation developing from the extension of the West German statute of limitations for prosecution of Nazi war criminals.
