A five-day triennial convention of the International Council of Jewish Women opened here last night, attended by delegates representing more than 500, 000 members in more than a dozen countries.
The Anglo-Jewish Association Women’s Union and the League of Jewish Women served as joint hosts to the delegates from the United States, Canada, several Latin American countries, a number of European nations, Israel, Hong Kong and Iran. Mrs. Alfred Rubens told the convention, in her presidential address, that the organization had consultative status with the U.N. Economic and Social Council, the United Nations Childrens Fund, and other United Nations Agencies.
Mrs. Zena Harman, UNICEF program committee chairman, said women could play a decisive role in efforts to bridge the gap between rich and poor, and to help deprived children. Messages were received from Queen Elizabeth, Chief Rabbi Nissim of Israel, the Jewish community of Hungary, and other groups here and abroad.
