Five prizes of $500 each were awarded this week-end to three Yiddish and two Hebrew writers whose works were selected as the best literary works in Yiddish and Hebrew published in the U.S. this year. The Yiddish winners were: Joseph Rolinch and H. Rosenblatt for their books of poetry; and Bezalel Sherman for his study “Jews and Other Ethnic Groups in the United States.” The Hebrew winners were Harry Sackler, for a volume of short stories, “Rainbow in the Clouds”; and Daniel Persky, for a book of essays.
The presentation ceremony, which was held in the auditorium of the New School for Social Research, was attended by several hundred people and presided over by S. Niger, noted Jewish critic. Speakers included Mr. Louis LaMed, the sponsor of the foundation which awarded the prizes; Menackem Ribalow, editor of the Hebrew weekly Hadoar; B.I. Byalostopsky, Jewish post; Moses Feinstein, educator, and others.
