Five Jews were among the 25 winners of Tuesday’s anti-poverty elections on the Lower East Side, according to the unofficial results tabulated by the Community Development Agency in an unusual election procedure that was allegedly marked by criminal tampering with voting records. The CDA announced this evening the victories of Marcus Taubenfeld, Martin Price, Joel Price, Barry Goldstein and Jerry Goodman as the new board members of the Lower East Side’s Community Corporation. Highest scoring among the candidates was Goldstein, who tallied 1834 votes. Goodman scored a close second with 1813 votes.
Losing to Martin Price was Roberto Napoleon, chairman of the local anti-poverty board who is accused of tearing the tally sheets after the polls closed Tuesday night. Napoleon was ordered suspended by David J. Billings III, chairman of the New York City Council Against Poverty (CAP). He will be subject to criminal investigation, according to CDA, the administrative arm of CAP.
