Senator Nathan Straus, Jr. has the best voting record of any senator from New York city in the State Senate, and five of nine Assemblymen from New York City whose records are meritorious are Jews.
These facts are gathered from the report of the legislative Committee of the Citizens’ Union-a non-sectarian, non-partisan organization which studies the records of all the members of the New York Legislature.
In the Assembly, the highest praise went to Assemblyman Joseph Steinberg, Republican member from the 15th Manhattan District. Two other Republicans, Assemblyman Sol Ullman and Assemblyman Victor Kaufman, and two Democrats Assemblymen Maurich Bloch and Samuel 😕 Rpsenman were also placed on the honor list.
In speaking of the record of Senator Straus, the report says:
“Senator Straus of all the Senators from the city made the best record of votes and introduced legislation of the highest character. Of sixty-six roll calls analyzed by the citizens’ Union on bills of importance, he was credited with fifty-seven votes in the public interest and nine against it. Allowing for the fact that he was doubtlessly recorded for some bad bills on short roll calls which he would have voted against had he been present, this is an unusual record”.
Senator Benjamin Antin of the Bronx was also accorded honorable mention for his voting record.
