Five young men who kidnaped an Israeli nurse from Welfare Island last October pleaded guilty here this weekend to first-degree attempted rape. The original indictment listed 20 counts of abduction, and other crimes for which, if convicted, each defendant could have been sentenced to 100 years’ imprisonment.
The nurse, however, was too shaken to testify and the guilty pleas were accepted as a compromise. The five were released on bail pending sentencing, which is set for June 23. The law provides for a maximum 10 years’ imprisonment on the charge to which the men pleaded guilty.
