THERE IS A GROWING FEELING IN POLITICAL CIRCLES, THE NEWS-CHRONICLE’S DIPLOMATIC CORRESPONDENT REPORTED TODAY, THAT THE PALESTINE MANDATE SHOULD BE TRANSFERRED FROM THE COLONIAL TO THE FOREIGN OFFICE DURING PALESTINE’S TRANSITION PERIOD.

THIS FEELING IS HELD IN VIEW OF THE COLONIAL OFFICE’S UNSUITABILITY FOR HANDLING CLASS A MANDATES, THE REPORT SAYS, AND ALSO BECAUSE OF THE INCREASING INTERNATIONAL ASPECTS OF THE SITUATION.

SIR JOHN ANDERSON, FORMER GOVERNOR OF BENGAL, WHO HAS BEEN MENTIONED TO SUCCEED SIR ARTHUR GRENFELL WAUCHOPE AS PALESTINE HIGH COMMISSIONER, HAS HINTED HIS RELUCTANCE TO ACCEPT THE POSITION, IF OFFERED, WHILE PALESTINE IS UNDER THE COLONIAL OFFICE, THE NEWS-CHRONICLE ADDS.

SIR ARTHUR LEFT LAST NIGHT FOR THE HOLY LAND TO RESUME HIS DUTIES. HE WAS TO HAVE LEFT A FORTNIGHT AGO BUT CONTINUED ILL-HEALTH FORCED HIM TO POSTPONE HIS DEPARTURE UNTIL YESTERDAY. SIR ARTHUR, WHO RETURNED TO ENGLAND FOR MEDICAL TREATMENT, HAS RESIGNED HIS POST, EFFECTIVE EARLY IN 1938.
