A forest commemorating Maj. Gen. Orde Charles Wingate was planted today on JNF land on the slopes of Mount Gilboa, where Wingate had his headquarters, when, as a captain, he led the famous mixed British-Jewish "night squads" which crushed Arab terrorists in 1936-1939.
Wingate, who rose to fame during the last war as leader of "Wingate’s Raiders," whose operations against the Japanese in Burma became legendary, was held in great esteem by the Jews of Palestine, and, in turn, was a staunch advocate of Zionism. Many of the Haganah’s crack units are composed of man who received their first training as members of Wingate’s night squads. The funds for the forest were raised chiefly in Palestine itself.
