— Yaacov Meridor, a former leader of the Irgun and of the Herut Party, is to return to the political field after many years during which he concentrated on business affairs. Meridor agreed to an appeal by Premier Menachem Begin to return to active political life, offering him a serior position in the next Cabinet if Begin is reelected in June.
Aides said Begin would like Meridor to take over coordination of economic matters in the government. Political observers suggested that Begin would like to groom Meridor as his heir-apparent, to take over leadership of the Herut when he retires. Begin has said he would retire from political life at the age of 70, in two years time.
