Gregory F. Noonan, former United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, yesterday protested to the Special Committee of the Brooklyn Character Committee against the admission to the Bar of John F. Cassidy, Brooklyn Christian Front Leader.
Mr. Noonan stated: “Certainly, more is required for admission to the Bar than an acquittal by a jury for conspiracy to overthrow the United States Government, as is the case of Mr. Cassidy. If the Bar is to remain a profession cloaked with dignity and respect, men of Cassidy’s ilk must not be allowed to enter its sacred portals.
“If Cassidy is admitted to the Bar, then I respectfully submit there is no function for a Character Committee. Notice will then have been served to applicants that an academic training is all that is necessary for admission to the Bar, and character is not one of the required attributes of a lawyer.”
