A strong appeal to Americans to aid Israel was voiced here last night by former Vice President Alben W. Barkley. Addressing a dinner meeting to raise funds for a workers’ community center in Israel, he said: “No more tragic thing could happen in the democratic world than for the State of Israel to fail.”
Mr. Barkley expressed the opinion that Israel “serves as a beacon of freedom” in the Near and Middle East. “If Israel can be preserved,” he said, “their neighbors, seeing the superiority of democracy and freedom, will accept the example and join the free nations. Then we will see a resurgence of democracy and will bless the day we helped create this nation.”
