Soviet police arrested two of 30 Jews gathered at the Kiev synagogue yesterday and then seized two more as the remaining 28 headed toward the Kiev Central Committee to protest the initial arrests, the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry reported today. It was the second consecutive weekend marked by the arrests of Jews at the synagogue.
Mark Yampolsky and Dom Smuckler were the two arrested there yesterday and Prof. Vladimir Barboy and his son Boris were the ones taken on the way to the Central Committee. All four were charged with resisting the authorities, as were four Jews arrested a week ago who are still in police custody. Following yesterday’s arrests, six Kiev Jews sent a telegram to Soviet President Nikolai V. Podgorny “protesting the arbitrariness of the Soviet police’s arrest procedures,” and demanded the release of all eight Jews arrested. Mrs. Barboy sent a similar telegram.
