A new Franco-Israel cultural pact, granting Israel the right to request deletion of anti-Jewish material from French textbooks, has been reached between the two states. The agreement will be initialled at the Quai d’Orsay, Friday.
David Catarivas, new cultural counsellor at the Israel Embassy here, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that the pact empowers Israel to ask for removal from school books and other educational material references to Israel or the Jewish people which might be prejudicial to their good name. France is given similar rights in reference to educational material in use in Israel.
The agreement further covers scientific cooperation between the two countries and sets up standards for mutual recognition of the educational equivalent of a university diploma. A special mixed Israel-French commission will be established to supervise implementation of the agreement. Experts in various fields will also be exchanged, under the terms of the pact.
