France’s determination to insure Israel’s territorial integrity was reaffirmed today by French Foreign Minister Christian Pineau during a debate in the National Assembly.
Commenting on the NATO statement stressing the need for territorial stability in the Middle East, M. Pineau declared that “France is against any territorial changes in the Near East, particularly against any changes of Israel’s borders. Any such change is liable to disturb the precarious peace of the region.”
M. Pineau had some harsh words for the Soviet proposal that nuclear bases and weapons be barred from the Middle East. “This plan,” he said, would empty the area of nuclear weapons from within, but would expose it to nuclear weapons dropped from above.”
