The French Government will propose the closing down of displaced persons camps in Germany and the dispersion of the DP’s in villages and communities when the Preparatory Commission of the International Refugee Organization opens its second meeting in Lausanne May 1, it was reliably learned today.
It is also understood that the British Government will submit a plan for placing the DP’s in its zone under military control. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned in diplomatic circles that Arthur J. Altmeyer, executive secretary of the Commission, will oppose the British plan and press for I.R.O. control of the DP centers. A spirited discussion is expected on both issues.
The Chinese Government – which yesterday became the thirteenth nation to announce its adherence to the I.R.O. – will be represented when the Preparatory Commission re-assembles. Two more nations are needed to start I.R.O., which will come into being when 75 percent of its first year’s operational budget of $151,060,500 has been subscribed unconditionally. Thus far 72 percent has been pledged.
