Fred Stein Succeeds Sol G. Rosenbaum As President of Montefiore Hospital

The election of Fred M. Stein as president of Montefiore Hospital for Chronic Diseases, following a quarter century of service as a member of the board of trustees of the institution, has been announced by William Goldman, vice-president of the hospital. Mr. Stein took office as of January 1, 1930.

As the third president to hold office since Montefiore was founded in 1884, Mr. Stein succeeds Sol G. Rosenbaum, who resigned the presidency on December 31, after ten years of service, in the belief that rotation in office is desirable.

Montefiore Hospital for Chronic Diseases, which as the foremost hospital for chronics in the country gives more free service than any hospital in its class in New York, according to the impartial findings of the United Hospital Fund, is one of the constituent agencies of the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies. With the exception of Adolph Lewisohn, who is president of the He brew Sheltering Guardian Society and the Hebrew Technical School for Girls, the new president of Montefiore, who has been a member of the board of Federation since its inception in 1917, is the only individual who is the president of two Federation institutions at the same time. In addition to Montefiore, Mr. Stein has been president, for the last sixteen years, of the Committee for the Care of the Jewish Tuberculous, which among other activities maintains a model graduated workshop where the doctors are the bosses and the foremen are the nurses.

A member of the class of ’95 of Harvard University, Mr. Stein retired from the banking firm of Borg & Company ni 1917 to take up full-time work with the American Red Cross during the war, first in New York and then in Washington. Since that time, he has not been actively connected with business, but has given the major portion of his time to social service work of various kinds.

In addition to being a member of the Federation board and president of two of its institutions, Mr. Stein is secretary of the New York Tuberculosis and Health Association, member of the advisory committee of the Milbank Memorial Fund, member of the executive committee of the Bellevue Yorkville Health Demonstration, chairman of the executive committee, and member of the board of the Potts Memorial Hospital, director of the Training School for Jewish Social Work, and chairman of the Men’s Committee of the Child Study Association of America. Mr. Stein has also been chairman of the Allied Dental Clinics, member of the board of the National Tuberculosis Association, and chairman of the health section of the recently completed Jewish Communal Survey.
