“free Rumania” Leader Pledges Jews Be Restored to Their Rights in Post-war Rumania

The assurance that “all Rumanian Jews, even those who had to flee into exile will be restored to their full constitutional rights” in a post-war democratic Rumania is given by Charles A. Davila, former Rumanian Minister to the United States, who is now the organizer of a Free Rumania movement in America, in a letter addressed to Charles Sonnenreich, president of the United Rumanian Jews of America, made public here today.

The letter came as a reply to the decision of the organization of Rumanian Jews in America to give “full moral support to Davila’s initiative in the creation of an organization that will represent Rumanian democracy abroad and that will have an uncompromising attitude towards all elements who at any time fostered or accepted racial discrimination.”

In answering this letter, Mr. Davila assures that Jews of Rumanian descent in America “can trust the Rumanian democrats whom I represent, to see that no racial or religious discrimination whatsoever will be accepted by them and that all Rumanian Jews, even those who had to flee into exile, will be restored to their full constitutional rights, as existing prior to the discarding by the royal dictatorship of the democratic constitution. Besides this legal aspect of the problem, I avail myself of this opportunity to state again how deeply I was always moved by the attachment of this opportunity to state again how deeply I was always moved by the attachment of the American Jews of Rumanian descent to their country of origin, in spite of the endless injustices and inhuman treatment their co-religionists endured there. This feeling was due, no doubt, to their knowledge of the traditional tolerance of the Rumanian people and to their conviction that only a regime organically attracted by totalitarian principles could lower itself to such brutalities and denials of justice.”
