Action “soon” on the freeing of Nazi war criminals was predicted today by West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer in an interview released here by U.S. News and World Report. Dr. Adenauer was quoted as saying that “something will happen soon” and that he had discussed the matter with Walter J. Donnelly, U. S. High Commissioner for Germany.
The White House, meanwhile, has received a plea from the National Council for Prevention of War to release before Christmas the 300 Nazis still in American custody. The N. C. P. W. is the organization which endorsed Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy’s activities in defense of Gestapo troops guilty of the Malmedy atrocities and it has otherwise sought to aid Nazi war criminals.
State Department sources said today that the Nazis remaining in custody represent the most vicious war criminals including Gestapo killers and concentration camp sadists. All but these most fanatic Nazis have already been pardoned.
